Tang-Kuei general notes
Tang Kuei Tablets is a formula intended to deliver a large dose of tang kuei, which is sometimes used as a single herb remedy in China. Tang kuei nourishes blood, vitalizes blood, relaxes muscles, invigorates the spleen, and helps regulate menstruation it does not have significant hormonal effects. Here, tang kuei is complemented by other herbs that emphasize its functions. The formula, like the single herb, has a warm nature. The basic formula is similar to Tang Kuei and Ginseng Eight Combination (Bazhen Tang see Song Formulas), sometimes offered in patent form under the name Women's Precious Pills (see Pine Mountain). The ingredients of that formula are tang kuei, peony, rehmannia, and cnidium for nourishing blood and invigorating blood circulation, and codonopsis, atractylodes, hoelen, and licorice for tonifying qi to aid in nourishing blood. These ingredients are included here along with four others: cyperus and saussurea to regulate qi, and deer antler and psoralea to invigorate the bone marrow, which will contribute to blood cell production. In cases where a heat syndrome is present, one would use, instead, Tang kuei 18 for cases of blood stasis syndrome, one would use Millettia 9 instead or in addition to Tang kuei Tablets. See also Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan (Pine Mountain). For abnormal blood function due to bone marrow deficiency, see also Antler 8 and Pantosterone (White Tiger), which provide additional deer antler.
